Of German Cousins and Their Walk Rights

My darlings, let me update you on a certain canine rights development in Germany. The German Minister of Agriculture introduced a draft law which, if passed, will require German humans to walk their canine companions at least twice a day for a total minimum of one hour. ”Pets are not cuddly toys!”, declared the Minister. And good for her! Although of course we are cuddly but we are not toys and should be treated with care and compassion for our physical and mental health needs. To quote Ms. Rose from de Saint-Exupery’s “The Little Prince”, “You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.” And I do so hope all humans considered canine long-term needs before they impulse-adopted their furry pandemic buddies... What would happen when you eventually go back to work or to running your businesses or when your kids return to their schools and colleges? I hope you have a plan for those you have tamed. I hope you know that we will miss you and that it will be difficult for us to get used to being on our own or to be re-socialized in pupcare. So please make sure we spend some time playing with other furbabies - a couple of play dates a week would do us good, help stave off weight gain and boredom and make us more resilient for when you, our humans, would finally be able to venture out into your bigger human world.

Unabashedly yours,

JT
